Mooeys Ltd, a salon chain based in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire has come up with an innovative plan to launch their own Sponsorship Programme in order to combat the recruitment crisis the beauty industry is currently facing.

They are recruiting trainee beauty therapists and training them in house to their own high standards with their fully accredited BABTAC & The Beauty Guild training courses.

They are planning to do a yearly intake which will really benefit so many different types of people. Some that want to re train, those needing a refresher, people that don’t necessarily want to go to college for a year, people that can’t afford to go to college, or those who can’t take time out of work to train. This really is a solution to an ongoing problem we find ourselves dealing with post pandemic.

During the 26 week intensive training programme, students will cover all treatments that are offered within the salon chain. This includes gel manicures, pedicures and extensions with and all waxing, including intimate waxing via their sister company’s training brand under Mooeys Professional. They will also be covering Lash Tinting with The Beauty Guild along with Brow Lamination and Lash Lifting with KG professional.

Once students have completed all theory and practical training to the Mooeys standard, they then spend up to two weeks practicing on existing clients within their salon by carrying out Free treatments until they are signed off by their manager as ready to charge full price.

This Sponsorship Programme gives students practical experience that equates to more than 5 times the hands-on practice that they would receive in a full year of college… in just two weeks, and this is why they believe it is key to the future in recruiting beauty therapists within this current climate.

Amy Lewis, Director of the Mooeys group says “Running two of my own salons, and supporting 3 franchises, I had to find a solution to this recruitment crisis that we have found ourselves in. The demand was there, we just didn’t have the staff, and found it almost impossible to recruit when the larger Spas were paying so much more to attract the few candidates looking for work in the industry.

The students that were coming out of college post the pandemic just weren’t confident in any treatments, or even showing up for interviews, and I just couldn’t sit back and accept that this was our fate after successfully making it through the worst two years of our business existence.

As we already had our Mooeys Masters training programme set up to deliver the best waxing short courses available, along with already being training partners with KG professional, it solved a huge problem for us, but also gives an opportunity to people who really couldn’t find an alternative way into the industry.

The whole experience has been an incredible way of engaging with our local communities and our clients who have been so supportive of this approach. We had over 25 applicants purely from our database, and only 6 places available.

It has been such a success that we will be launching the next intake in January and already have a waiting list. I am so proud of what we have achieved as a team, but especially Jo, our Trainer Manager who has done an absolutely incredible job of building confidence and passion for this incredible industry amongst the students.”

It may be something you want to consider for your own business if you are struggling to recruit a fully qualified person.
